Plans are being made to reverse the legislation requiring the VVPAT (Voter Verified Paper Audit Trail) requirement to voting equipment purchased for elections in 2006 and beyond!

Senate Bill SB77 will be debated in the Senate Committee "State and Local Government Affairs" on Wednesday, March 16,2005 at 4pm. Please plan to attend, as they will be discussing plans to approve paper-less DRE's. Check back for more details re: location. We need to be there! [To find out the status of a bill and when the next hearing is scheduled, call 1-800-282-0253 (466-8842 in Columbus).]

If this bill passes, Secretary of State Kenneth Blackwell will reverse his requirement that counties purchase Optical Scan equipment. His representative said so in the Cuyahoga Board of Elections Board meeting on 3/7/05. (see transcript below)

Cuyahoga County plans to purchase such paperless DRE's from Diebold (they decided this in January 2004) if SB77 passes. (See transcript from 3/7/05 Board Meeting)

2005/2/25 Election-related Legislation 2/25/05 update (received from anonymous donor. This document, supposedly, was posted on the OAEO website, but there seems to be no www.oaeo.org site. Was there ever? Does anyone know?)
